Why this matters: Retinol works. But Cairo’s heat, bright sun, dust, and hard water can turn a good routine into a week of irritation. Customers often ask us the same thing in-store: “How do I start retinol without looking flaky?” Here’s the exact approach our team recommends for beginners—slow, barrier-first, and summer-proof.

Is retinol right for you?

  • Skip for now if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, in the middle of an eczema/dermatitis flare, or if your skin barrier is already irritated (stinging from plain moisturizer = barrier first, retinol later).

  • If you have rosacea or very sensitive skin, start ultra-low and consider niacinamide for a month before you even open a retinol bottle.

Pharmacist tip: Cairo tap water is on the hard side; that mineral load can leave skin tight and more reactive. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry—don’t rub.

The “Prep Week” (no retinol yet)

Goal: Make your skin boring—in the best way.

  • AM: Gentle cleanse → hydrating serum (e.g., glycerin/HA) → SPF 50+ you actually like reapplying.

  • PM: Cleanse → ceramide-rich moisturizer.

  • Patch test: Dab a rice-grain of retinol behind the ear for 3 nights. Any angry reaction? Pause and talk to us.

Your Cairo-smart ramp plan (7 weeks)

Weeks 1–2: Tiny & infrequent

  • PM, 2 nights/week (non-consecutive): Cleanse → wait until skin is fully dry → moisturize → rice-grain retinol on forehead/cheeks/chin (avoid corners of nose, lips, and eye rims) → moisturize again.
    (That’s the “sandwich method”—buffers irritation.)

Weeks 3–4: Build gently

  • PM, 3 nights/week: Same amount (still a rice-grain), still non-consecutive.

  • If zero irritation for 2 weeks, you can apply directly on dry skin (no pre-moisturizer) but keep the post-moisturizer.

Weeks 5–7: Hold or nudge

  • PM, 3–4 nights/week. Only consider increasing the amount to two rice-grains total if your skin is calm and you’re using SPF daily.

  • If you’re outdoors a lot in mid-day sun, stay at 2–3 nights/week through summer.

Signal you’ve gone too fast: burning that lasts more than 15 minutes, shiny tightness, or flaking around the mouth and nose. Take 3–5 nights off, use only moisturizer + SPF, then restart at the previous step.

What not to mix on the same night

  • Strong acids (AHA/BHA), scrubs, or peel pads

  • High-strength L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) serums with low pH

  • Benzoyl peroxide leave-ons (can be too irritating together)

  • Hair-removal creams or facial waxing (give a 5–7 day buffer)

OK to pair: niacinamide, panthenol, centella, ceramides, cholesterol + fatty acids, bland hydrating serums.

Two Cairo-friendly starter routines

Budget-friendly

AM: Cleanser → hydrating serum → lightweight SPF 50+ (non-greasy finish)
PM (retinol nights): Cleanser → dry 15–20 min → moisturizer → retinol (rice-grain) → moisturizer
PM (rest nights): Cleanser → moisturizer → optional occlusive on flaky spots

Comfort-max (sensitive skin)

AM: Creamy cleanser → niacinamide serum → SPF 50+
PM (retinol nights): Creamy cleanser → moisturizer → micro-dot retinol → moisturizer → a dab of balm on corners of nose/lips

Reapplication reality: 38°C busier days melt sunscreen. Keep a travel SPF or SPF stick for the car and reapply over tissue-blotted skin.

Common bumps in the road (and quick fixes)

  • Flaking: You’re probably applying on damp skin or using too much. Reduce to a half rice-grain and always apply on bone-dry skin.

  • Breakouts: Mild “purging” can happen around week 2–4. If inflamed cysts appear or purging lasts >6 weeks, pause and check in with us.

  • Stinging from water: Switch to a cream cleanser at night; consider a splash with filtered or bottled water during the first weeks.

Summer vs. winter in Egypt

  • Summer: Fewer retinol nights, lighter gel-cream textures, powders or sticks for SPF reapplication.

  • Winter: Air is drier indoors; keep retinol frequency but upgrade to a thicker night moisturizer.

When to see a dermatologist

  • Persistent redness, burning, or rash

  • Repeated painful breakouts instead of short-lived purging

  • You’re considering stronger options (e.g., tretinoin) or are on acne medication already
